Ngorongoro Crater — Rim Viewpoint

Point of Interest

The Ngorongoro Crater rim in northern Tanzania puts you 600m above a 260 sq km caldera floor that holds one of Africa’s densest concentrations of wildlife — lion, elephant, rhino, wildebeest, flamingo — all packed into a natural amphitheatre that has no need for fences. The rim road along the crater’s edge offers multiple viewpoints and the sense of scale is staggering. Dawn from the rim with mist rolling off the crater floor is the kind of thing that rewires your brain.

Access requires Tanzania National Parks fees and entry through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. Descent into the crater floor is by 4WD only and must be arranged through the NCA — private vehicles are permitted but guides are mandatory. The main gate and rim lodge area sit at around 2,300m so nights are cold year-round. Dry season (June–October) gives better game viewing and firmer crater-floor tracks.

The world's greatest wildlife amphitheatre.
