Karatu Campground — Gibbs Farm Road Ngorongoro Gateway
Karatu is the overland hub for this whole corridor. The town sits at roughly 1,400 m in the fertile highlands between Manyara and Ngorongoro, and the campground here gives you flush toilets, hot showers, and a secure perimeter — rare luxuries before you drop into the rift. It’s used by both independent overlanders and safari operators running budget-tier tented camps, so expect a mix of Land Cruisers, rooftops, and the occasional overloaded safari van. Busy during dry season (June–October), quiet and sometimes muddy in the long rains (March–May).
Access is off the main Arusha–Ngorongoro tarmac road, fully sealed to the campground. Stock up on fuel, water, and produce here — once you’re heading toward Ol Doinyo Lengai and Lake Natron, options thin out fast. Cell signal is decent in town. Road to Natron is rough dirt and lava rock; confirm conditions locally before departure.
Last hot shower before the rift drops away.
