Nahanni Butte — Liard River Confluence Viewpoint

Nahanni Butte is a 1,640-foot sandstone tower rising abruptly from the flats at the junction of the South Nahanni and Liard Rivers — one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Northwest Territories. The small Dene community of the same name sits at its base, accessible only by gravel road or river. For overlanders finishing the Liard Trail from Fort Simpson, this is the end of the line — the road terminates at the village. The view across the confluence is worth every kilometre of washboard you endured getting here.

The community is tiny and services are extremely limited — do not count on fuel or supplies. The road in from the Liard Highway is rough, unmaintained in places, and can become impassable after heavy rain. Best window is June through September. Respect the community — this is First Nations land. No camping within the village without permission.
