Moldo-Ashuu Pass — Tian Shan High Road to Son-Kul Plateau
Moldo-Ashuu is the main mountain pass connecting the Kochkor valley to the Son-Kul plateau, and it earns every meter of elevation. The road climbs through open alpine meadows before cresting a broad, wind-hammered saddle with nothing between you and the sky. On a clear day you can see the Son-Kul basin spread out to the south and snow-capped ridges in every direction. Yurts dot the slopes from June onward — these are working jailoo camps, not tourist setups. Treat them as such.
The road surface is compressed dirt with loose gravel on the upper switchbacks. In dry conditions a capable 4WD handles it fine; after rain it turns slick clay and can stop rigs cold. Snow is possible any month above 2,800m. No fuel, no water infrastructure — carry full tanks and your own supply. Cell signal disappears completely past the lower valley. Best window is June through September.
