Arches of the Kimberley — Mitchell Falls (Punamii-unpuu)
Mitchell Falls — known by its traditional name Punamii-unpuu — drops in four tiers through ancient sandstone country in the Mitchell River National Park, far northwestern Western Australia. The final plunge into a broad plunge pool is genuinely jaw-dropping. This is not a drive-up attraction: you’re walking 8.6km return through rough spinifex country to get there, and the approach road from Drysdale River Station is corrugated, rocky, and long. It earns every step.
The Mitchell Plateau track runs roughly 160km from the Gibb River Road and demands a capable 4WD with good ground clearance — creek crossings and sharp rock sections are the norm. The park is only accessible during the dry season, typically May through October. Helicopter tours operate out of a nearby airstrip for those who don’t want the overland slog, but that’s not why you came out here.
