Meili Snow Mountain — Kawagebo Sacred Peak Viewpoint

Kawagebo (Kawagarbo), the highest peak of the Meili Snow Mountain range, dominates the skyline as you drive the Sichuan–Tibet Highway approach into Deqin. The classic viewpoint sits above the town at Feilai Temple (Feilai Si), where prayer flags stretch across the forecourt and the entire 13-peak massif fills the horizon across the Lancang Gorge. Sunrise here — when alpenglow lights the glaciers above the clouds — is one of the most iconic mountain moments in all of western China. The range has never been successfully summited; Tibetan authorities and climbers have respected that prohibition since a 1991 disaster claimed 17 lives.

The Feilai Temple viewpoint is accessible via paved road from Deqin town, roughly 10km. Cloud cover frequently obscures the peaks — October through January offers the clearest windows. Cell signal is partial in Deqin itself. Fuel up in Deqin before pushing further into the canyon; it’s the last reliable fuel stop heading southwest toward Benzilan.
