Medicine Bow Peak Overlook

Windswept alpine viewpoint at 12,013 feet offering panoramic views across the Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre ranges.

The highest point in the Medicine Bow Range, this summit overlook provides 360-degree views stretching from the Colorado Rockies to the Great Divide Basin. A rough 4WD track leads to within a quarter-mile of the peak, though many overlanders park lower and hike the final approach. The summit plateau sits above treeline with ancient krummholz and seasonal wildflower displays. Weather changes rapidly — afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during summer months.

Access via Medicine Bow Peak Road (Forest Road 346) from Highway 130. The road deteriorates significantly above Libby Flats, requiring high-clearance 4WD for the upper sections. Snow typically blocks access from October through June. No facilities at the summit — bring layers and rain gear. The overlook makes an excellent sunrise destination for those willing to camp nearby and make the pre-dawn drive.
