Liberty Falls State Recreation Site

Established Campground

Liberty Falls is a small Alaska State Parks campground tucked into spruce forest along the Edgerton Highway, a short drive west of Chitina. The campground sits beside Liberty Creek, and a short walk gets you to the falls. It’s quiet and shaded, with a few drive-in sites. Pit toilets and tables are the basics, and the rest you bring yourself. For overlanders it makes a good last night on pavement before the 60-mile gravel run to the Kennicott River.

It’s on pavement the whole way and any rig can get in. Mosquitoes can be thick in summer, so pack bug gear. Facilities, fees, and site counts change from year to year, so check with Alaska State Parks before you go and don’t count on a particular site being open. Fuel up and top off water in Chitina before you roll onto the McCarthy Road, because services past the gravel are thin and pricey.

Have a dirty day.

Last pavement camp before the McCarthy Road.
