Lençóis Maranhenses Sand Dune Lakes

Point of Interest

Thousands of crystal-clear lagoons fill the valleys between massive white sand dunes during the rainy season, creating one of Brazil’s most surreal landscapes. The park covers 600 square miles of shifting dunes up to 130 feet tall, with turquoise and emerald pools that reach perfect swimming temperature. Peak lagoon season runs June through September when rainwater collects in the interdune valleys.

Access requires 4WD vehicles and local guides from Barreirinhas town — the soft sand and unmarked routes make solo navigation nearly impossible. The lagoons gradually dry up from October to December, leaving only sand. Bring sun protection and plenty of water, as shade is nonexistent on the dunes. The park gates close at sunset, and overnight camping is prohibited within the protected area.
