Lake Willoughby South Beach

Point of Interest

This pristine glacial lake stretches between two towering peaks, creating one of Vermont’s most dramatic landscapes. The south beach access offers the best vehicle approach and parking, with clear deep water perfect for a post-trail swim. The lake stays cold even in summer—expect 60-degree water at best. Popular with locals but surprisingly quiet midweek.

The approach from the Burke Mountain trail system involves winding through Orleans county back roads, but they’re well-maintained gravel and dirt. Park along the beach area—no formal camping but day use is welcome. The cliffs rising 1,000 feet on both sides create their own weather, so be ready for sudden temperature drops even on warm days.
