Laguna de Iguaque Sacred Lake Trailhead
The Muisca people believed this high-altitude lake was where Bachué, the mother of humanity, emerged to populate the earth. The trailhead sits at Villa de Leyva’s edge, beginning a steep 8-kilometer climb through cloud forest and páramo to reach the lake at 3,700 meters. Early morning starts essential to avoid afternoon cloud cover that can drop visibility to mere meters.
Trail is well-marked but extremely steep with muddy sections year-round. Park entry fee required at the gate. The final kilometer crosses exposed páramo where hypothermia is a real risk even in dry season — pack warm layers and rain gear. Sacred to indigenous communities, so maintain respectful silence at the lake.
