Laguna Colorada Flamingo Colony
This blood-red salt lake in Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve hosts thousands of James’s, Chilean, and Andean flamingos year-round, creating one of South America’s most surreal wildlife spectacles. The lake’s crimson color comes from algae and minerals, while borax islands dot the shallow waters where flamingos feed and nest. At nearly 14,000 feet elevation, the thin air and intense UV require preparation, but the sight of pink birds against red water and white salt formations is unforgettable.
Access requires 4WD and comes at the end of a long, rough track from the main Uyuni tour route. The road can be impassable during the brief rainy season (December-February). Wind is constant and brutal — dust storms can reduce visibility to zero. No facilities exist here, and the nearest fuel is hours away in Uyuni. Bring warm clothes; temperatures drop below freezing even in summer.
