Kolyma Highway — Debin River Gravel Bar Dispersed Camp
The Debin River valley is one of the more accessible pull-off points along the Kolyma Highway in Magadan Oblast. The gravel bars here are wide enough to pitch a tent or drop the rear tailgate, the river runs cold and clear, and the taiga presses in on both sides giving you that proper end-of-the-world feeling. No facilities, no signs, no rangers — just you, the river noise, and whatever’s howling in the treeline at night. Mosquitoes are savage June through August; a head net is not optional.
Access is directly off the R504 near the town of Debin, which sits roughly 450 km northeast of Yakutsk along the highway. The road surface in this corridor alternates between rough gravel and badly rutted dirt — high-clearance 4WD is the minimum. Spring breakup (May) makes stretches impassable. Best window is July through September. Debin itself has limited fuel; top up whenever you can.
