Kluane Lake — Sheep Mountain Dall Sheep Viewpoint
Sheep Mountain rises directly from the eastern shore of Kluane Lake along the Alaska Highway between Haines Junction and Destruction Bay. It’s one of the most reliable places in the Yukon to spot Dall sheep with the naked eye — they come down to the mineral licks on the lower slopes, sometimes within a few hundred metres of the road. Parks Canada formerly maintained a visitor kiosk here; even without staff present, the pullout and interpretive signage remain. The backdrop is stunning — turquoise Kluane Lake, the Kluane Range across the water, and a sky that goes forever on a clear day.
This stop sits right on the approach to the Slims River West Bench Road and is a natural pre-run checkpoint for the Kluane country routes. Bing your binoculars. The sheep are most visible in spring and early summer when they’re on the licks. Pull off, get eyes on the terrain, and check your fuel before heading north toward Destruction Bay.
