Khunjerab Pass — China-Pakistan Border Summit Viewpoint

Khunjerab Pass tops out at 4,693 metres, making it the highest paved international border crossing on Earth. The crossing point is marked by an arch monument and a Chinese customs post on the north side. On clear days the surrounding Karakoram peaks are staggering — raw glaciated ridges in every direction, yaks grazing the high meadows below. This is where China ends and Pakistan begins, and the altitude will remind you of that fact immediately. Snow lingers well into June and can return by late September.

The pass is only open to foreign nationals when the KKH is officially open — historically May 1 to November 30, but confirm current status with Chinese customs in Tashkurgan before heading up. Pakistani vehicles enter from the south; Chinese customs controls the north gate. No fuel, food, or water at the pass itself — sort everything in Tashkurgan, 130km south of Kashgar.
