Khongoryn Els Singing Sand Dunes Gobi Desert

Point of Interest

Khongoryn Els — the ‘Singing Sands’ — form one of the most spectacular dune systems in the Gobi Desert, stretching 180 kilometers long and rising up to 300 meters high. The dunes produce an eerie humming sound when sand cascades down their faces, audible for kilometers. This phenomenon occurs most frequently in dry conditions with light winds. The dunes are bordered by the green Khongoryn River valley, creating a dramatic contrast between golden sand and grassland.

Access requires crossing rough desert tracks from Dalanzadgad, roughly 180 kilometers of challenging driving through sand, rock, and occasional river crossings. A local guide is highly recommended for navigation and cultural protocol. The area is home to Bactrian camels and traditional herders. Temperatures swing wildly — summer days can hit 40°C while nights drop below freezing even in summer.
