This brutal but rewarding trail climbs 3,500 feet through alpine terrain to the edge of the massive Harding Icefield. The route starts in coastal rainforest, breaks treeline around mile 3, then becomes a rocky scramble to the icefield overlook. On clear days, the 360-degree views span dozens of glaciers flowing off the icefield. Pack layers—weather changes fast up there.
Trailhead is well-marked off Exit Glacier Road near Seward. Parking fills early in summer. Snow lingers on upper portions until July, and the trail can be dangerous in poor weather. Allow 6-8 hours round trip. Bears are common—make noise and pack spray.
