Gunnison National Forest — Spring Creek Pass Road Dispersed Camp

Spring Creek Pass sits at 10,901 feet on CO-149 between Lake City and Creede, and the surrounding Gunnison National Forest opens up for dispersed camping in the aspen and spruce flats on either side of the summit. Pull-offs along the forest roads branching off CO-149 give you open sky, meadow views, and the kind of quiet that only comes when you’re genuinely far from a town. No facilities, no fee, no crowds most weekdays — just you, the altitude, and the elk at dusk.

Access is straightforward on CO-149, but side roads into the timber can get soft after rain. Snow is possible any month at this elevation — don’t get caught flat-footed in September. 14-day stay limit applies. Fires may be restricted during drought; check with the Lake City Ranger District before you build one.
