Powderhorn Creek Road (FR 863) heads north from the Lake City area into a quiet corner of the Gunnison National Forest most overlanders drive right past. The creek bottom gives you flat ground, running water nearby, and genuine solitude — this isn’t a social camp, it’s the kind of place you end up sharing with exactly nobody on a Tuesday night. Timber surrounds you, there’s no signage, and the vibe is firmly backcountry. A solid choice for anyone staging near Lake City before pushing into the Alpine Loop corridor.

Road conditions vary with snowmelt and afternoon rains — high clearance is recommended and 4WD helps when things get soft. Creek crossings can be real crossings in early summer. Water from the creek should be treated. No facilities, no fee, 14-day limit. Verify fire restrictions with the Lake City Ranger District before arrival.
