Great Sand Dunes National Park Medano Creek Seasonal Flow
Medano Creek transforms the base of the Great Sand Dunes into an unexpected beach scene each spring and early summer. Snowmelt from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains creates “surge flow” — pulses of water every 30 seconds caused by sand dams breaking and reforming upstream. The creek spreads 100+ feet wide but stays ankle-deep, perfect for cooling off after hiking the 750-foot dunes. Kids build sand castles while parents soak feet in the surprisingly warm water.
Peak flow typically runs May through July, with June offering the most reliable water levels. Creek can disappear entirely by August in dry years. No shade here — the dunes reflect intense heat and UV. Parking fills fast on weekends during creek season. The phenomenon exists nowhere else in the US at this scale.
