Gifford Pinchot National Forest — Glacier View Road FR 1290 Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Pull off FR 1290 anywhere the road widens and you’ve got classic Gifford Pinchot dispersed camping — big conifers, soft duff ground, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why you built the rig in the first place. Sites are primitive, no signage, no amenities. You’ll share the general area with hunters in fall and ATV riders on weekends, but midweek it’s yours. Fire restrictions are common in July–September; check with the Cowlitz Valley Ranger District before you light anything.

FR 1290 off US-12 west of Packwood is generally passable by high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but ruts and soft shoulders after rain will catch you out. The road degrades as you climb — know your vehicle’s limits. Standard 14-day stay limit applies. No water on-site; pack in everything you need.

Quiet conifer dispersed camping off US-12.
