Garet el Djenoun — Erg Chech Volcanic Inselberg and Trans-Saharan Caravan Landmark
Garet el Djenoun — loosely translated as ‘Mountain of the Djinn’ — is a dark volcanic massif punching out of the pale sand of the Erg Chech, visible for tens of kilometers in every direction. For trans-Saharan overlanders running the ancient caravan corridor south from Tindouf toward Bordj Mokhtar, it serves as the single most reliable terrestrial waypoint in a region where GPS drift and featureless reg flats make navigation genuinely dangerous. The rock is striking — black basalt against ochre dunes — and the sense of scale and isolation here is absolute. No facilities, no shade beyond the rock itself, no water. Caravans camped at its base for centuries; you’ll understand why the moment you see it.
Access is cross-country via piste from the Tindouf corridor — no marked road, compass and GPS essential. Soft sand approaches demand aired-down tires and convoy travel. Best visited October through March when heat is survivable. Fuel and water must be carried from Tindouf; there is nothing else out here. Gendarmerie authorisation and convoy requirements apply — verify current travel permissions before departure.
