Erg Chech — Oued Tilemsi Approach Reg Flat Dispersed Camp
This is deep Sahara. The Oued Tilemsi approach corridor sits along the eastern flank of Erg Chech — one of the most remote and least-traveled sand seas in the western Sahara — where the gravel hammada gives way to the first fingers of the erg. Flat, hard-packed reg makes for easy vehicle positioning. No facilities, no shade, no water. You’re sleeping under stars so dark they feel low enough to touch, with nothing between you and the horizon for a hundred kilometers in every direction. Capacity is limitless but convoy travel is mandatory in this region; solo vehicles should not attempt this corridor.
Access is via the Piste de l’Erg Chech connecting Tindouf southeast toward Bordj Badji Mokhtar — a route with minimal signage and shifting sand sections. A GPS track, satellite communicator, and full fuel and water reserves (minimum 200L water and full jerrycans) are non-negotiable. Algerian military authorization and convoy registration at Tindouf or In Salah is required before departure. Best window is November through February; summer temperatures exceed 50°C and are genuinely life-threatening.
