El Tatio Geysers Field
At dawn, El Tatio looks like another planet. Steam columns rise from dozens of geysers scattered across a high plateau, backlit by the Andes peaks. The geothermal field spans several square kilometers, with boardwalks and marked paths keeping visitors away from the scalding water and unstable ground. Most geysers are small — 3 to 6 feet high — but they’re active year-round, fed by underground volcanic activity.
The access road from San Pedro de Atacama is rough gravel, 95 kilometers each way, taking 2+ hours. High-clearance 4WD recommended for the final 30km. Best activity is at sunrise when temperature differentials maximize steam production. By midday, most geysers go quiet. Altitude hits hard — bring water and take it slow.
World's highest geyser field at 14,100 feet
