El Salto Waterfall Sombrerete
A 40-foot waterfall drops into a deep turquoise pool surrounded by volcanic rock walls and desert vegetation. This hidden gem sits about 15 miles northeast of Sombrerete on a rough dirt track that weaves through scrub oak and volcanic outcrops. The pool is deep enough for swimming and stays cool even in summer heat. Local families sometimes camp here on weekends, but it’s usually quiet during weekdays.
The access road requires high-clearance and can be muddy after rains. No facilities — pack out everything. The track can be hard to follow in places, but GPS coordinates will get you close. Best combined with exploring the nearby volcanic spires.
