Dalton Highway — Atigun River Valley BLM Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Pull off the Dalton onto the gravel bars flanking the Atigun River south of Atigun Pass (around mile 243–248) and you’ve got one of the most dramatic dispersed camps on the entire highway. The Brooks Range towers above you, Dall sheep are a legitimate possibility on the slopes, and the river noise drowns out whatever truck traffic rolls through. Flat ground is plentiful on the gravel bars; just pick a site clear of the flood zone. No facilities, no signage, no fee. Fire restrictions apply — check BLM Central Yukon ahead of time, and above treeline wood fires are essentially a non-starter anyway. Bring a stove.

Access is direct off the Dalton — any high-clearance rig running the highway can get here. The valley can be wet and boggy off the gravel bars. Mosquitoes are biblical June through August. Snow is possible any month. Cell service is nonexistent. Season runs roughly June through September, though the road is open year-round for the oilfield trucks.

Brooks Range canyon floor, no frills, all wild.
