Wiseman Historic Mining District

Ghost town turned tiny community where old cabins and mining relics tell the story of Alaska's gold rush era.

Wiseman sits at mile 188 of the Dalton Highway, a collection of weathered cabins and mining artifacts scattered along the Middle Fork Koyukuk River. Founded in 1907 during the gold rush, maybe a dozen hardy souls still call this place home year-round. You can walk among old log cabins, rusted mining equipment, and a small museum that’s sometimes open. The Wiseman Trading Company operates sporadically—don’t count on it for supplies.

Access is via a short gravel spur road off the Dalton. The area floods during spring breakup, making access difficult in May. Summer brings mosquitoes in biblical proportions, but also wildflowers and decent photo opportunities. This is more about soaking up history than modern amenities—come prepared with everything you need.

Gold rush ghost town still breathing.
