Chequamegon National Forest FR 390 Dispersed Sites

Dispersed Camping

Forest Road 390 offers multiple dispersed camping spots scattered along a 6-mile stretch between the main highway and deeper forest access. Half a dozen established fire rings mark the most used sites, with a couple offering direct access to small fishing ponds. Sites range from open grassy clearings to wooded spots with decent privacy between groups. Most can handle medium-sized rigs, though the best lakefront spot requires backing down a short spur.

Access via gravel FR 390 is decent for most vehicles, though it gets rougher past mile marker 4. Spring can be muddy, and fall hunting season brings crowds. No services or water — pack everything in. Popular with weekend warriors from Minneapolis, so weekdays offer better solitude.
