Cerro Castillo — Portezuelo Cerro Castillo Summit Viewpoint
Cerro Castillo is one of the most dramatic peaks on the entire Carretera Austral. The portezuelo (mountain pass) sits above the village of Villa Cerro Castillo and offers a straight-on view of the castle-like basalt towers that give the mountain its name. From the roadside pullouts south of town on Ruta 7, you get the full panorama — glaciated flanks, turquoise lagunas below, and the Torres del Paine-style spires above. This is the money shot on the Chilean stretch of Patagonian highland driving.
The main trailhead access is via Reserva Nacional Cerro Castillo, but the roadside viewpoint requires nothing more than pulling over on the gravel shoulder south of Villa Cerro Castillo around km 75 from Coyhaique. Best light is morning. Snow can close the higher approaches April through November — the road itself stays open but conditions vary.
