Camping Sector Laguna Caro — Parque Nacional Cerro Castillo
Sector Laguna Caro is the established CONAF campground serving the southern approach to Cerro Castillo, the basalt spire that looks like something out of a fantasy novel rising above the Valle Ibáñez. Sites are basic — fire rings, pit toilets, and a water source from nearby drainages — but the setting is absurd. You’re camping in a glacially carved valley with the castle-toothed ridgeline overhead. It gets busy in December and January with trekkers doing the four-day traverse; show up early or during shoulder season (November, February–March) to actually breathe.
Access is off Ruta 7 south of Villa Cerro Castillo, roughly 100 km south of Coyhaique. The access track is passable for most vehicles but can get soft after heavy rain. CONAF charges a per-person fee; rangers on site intermittently. No cell service. Fires in designated rings only — respect wind conditions in this valley, they are real.
Basalt spires, CONAF camp, zero crowds off-peak.
