Carcross Desert — Yukon’s Little Sahara Viewpoint
Carcross Desert is a legitimate geological oddity — roughly one square mile of exposed sand dunes formed from the dried lakebed of a glacial lake, kept barren by desiccating winds off Bennett Lake. It’s not a mirage. You pull off the highway, step out of the rig, and you’re standing on actual dunes with mountain panoramas behind you. No crowds, no fee, no nonsense. The dunes sit right at the edge of Carcross townsite, making it an easy pull-in for anyone running the Tagish–Teslin Heritage Loop or staging for the Carcross backcountry.
Access is straightforward off the South Klondike Highway (Hwy 2) near the Carcross community. Vehicle tracks approach the dune edge but the loose sand will swallow low-clearance rigs — park at the edge and walk. Best in late afternoon light when the dunes glow gold against Bennett Lake. Cell service is partial in town.
The world's smallest desert, dead serious.
