Canning Stock Route — Well 33 Gibson Desert Claypan Dispersed Camp
Well 33 sits deep in the Gibson Desert on one of the most remote 4WD tracks on earth. The country around it is classic CSR: spinifex, red sand, and vast claypan flats that give you a sky so wide it’ll rewire your brain. Camp flat on the sand beside the well structure — no facilities, no fences, no other humans for a very long way. You’re on Aboriginal land managed under WDLAC permits, so carry your approved transit permit and treat the well sites with respect. Signage is minimal to nonexistent.
Access requires a fully self-sufficient rig: dual spares, high-lift, MaxTrax, and enough fuel and water for the full inter-well stage. The track between Wells 23 and 36 is entirely sand — deep in places — with no resupply. Best season is May to August; summer heat can be fatal. Wiluna is the last meaningful fuel stop heading north. Radio schedule discipline is non-negotiable out here.
Gibson Desert solitude, CSR mid-route.
