Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge
This 36,000-acre refuge protects critical bottomland habitat along the Pearl River system. No developed facilities, but several primitive camping spots exist along levee roads and high ground areas. Expect mud, mosquitoes, and incredible wildlife — wood ducks, alligators, wild hogs, and some of the best bass fishing in Louisiana. Bring bug spray and come prepared for wet conditions.
Access via gravel levee roads that can become impassable during high water. Spring and fall offer the best wildlife viewing, but summer heat and bugs are brutal. Check with refuge office for current road conditions and hunting seasons. Popular with hunters, so wear bright colors during deer season.
