Bale Mountains National Park — Sanetti Plateau Web Valley Viewpoint
The Sanetti Plateau in Ethiopia’s Bale Mountains sits above 4,000 metres and is the largest Afroalpine habitat in Africa. The road across it — passable in a 4WD — is widely cited as the highest all-weather road on the continent. Ethiopian wolves, the world’s rarest canid, are regularly spotted hunting mole-rats in the open moorland. Gelada baboons and mountain nyala also roam the plateau. The Web Valley below the escarpment edge is a dramatic drop into the highland forest zone.
Access is via Dinsho village, about 430 km southeast of Addis Ababa. The plateau road can be deeply rutted and boggy in the wet season — June through September. Dry season runs October through February. Park entry and guide fees apply at Dinsho headquarters. High-clearance 4WD is essential; the route is not a place to push your luck with a loaded roof rack on marginal tyres.
