Alabama Hills Movie Road
Movie Road winds through the heart of the Alabama Hills, past the weathered granite formations that served as backdrops for everything from Gunga Din to Iron Man. The 3.5-mile loop is mostly smooth dirt accessible to any vehicle, though a few rocky sections favor higher clearance. Dawn and dusk bring the best light on the Sierra Nevada backdrop, and you’ll recognize filming locations throughout the drive.
The road starts from Whitney Portal Road about 2.5 miles west of Lone Pine. Parking areas and short hiking trails branch off throughout the loop, leading to famous formations like Mobius Arch. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the BLM area with a 14-day limit, making this both a destination and a basecamp for Sierra adventures.
