Aït Benhaddou — UNESCO Ksar and Drâa-Tafilalet Desert Gateway
Aït Benhaddou is the real deal: a living, partially inhabited ksar built from pisé and straw, stacked in defensive tiers above the Ounila River, with the High Atlas as its backdrop. It’s been a film set for everything from Gladiator to Game of Thrones, but that doesn’t diminish the place — the architecture is genuinely stunning, and the light at golden hour will make you forget every overlanding hardship getting here. You can cross the river on foot or by mule (low season) or drive to the new bridge, then walk the alleys. The hilltop granary gives you a wide-angle view across the whole valley.
Sits about 30km northwest of Ouarzazate on the N9/R302 junction — easy pavement access, well signposted. Gets busy with tour buses by mid-morning; show up early or at dusk to have it mostly to yourself. If you’re running the Drâa-Tafilalet region, this is a mandatory stop before pushing south.
