Manu Biosphere Circuit – Amazon Headwaters Expedition
Cloud forest to Amazon in Peru's wildest reserve
The Manu Biosphere Circuit drops 3,500 meters from cloud forest to rainforest floor, following one of South America’s most biodiverse corridors through Parque Nacional del Manu in Madre de Dios. This expedition route starts at Tres Cruces viewpoint (3,800m) and descends through every ecosystem from páramo to lowland jungle, crossing the Kosñipata River system multiple times before reaching the Manu River at 300 meters elevation. The final stretch to Cocha Salvador requires boat transport, but the 4WD portion covers 220 kilometers of Peru’s wildest backcountry.
Difficult rating due to river crossings, muddy conditions, and complete remoteness — not technical rock crawling, but serious expedition territory. Modified 4WD with snorkel, winch, and full camping setup required, plus permits from SERNANP obtained weeks in advance. Dry season (May-September) is essential; wet season makes this route impassable. You’re trading comfort for access to one of the planet’s most intact ecosystems, where jaguar tracks outnumber tire tracks.
