Emigrant Trail — Lovelock to Winnemucca via the Humboldt Sink Desert Crossing

The Humboldt Sink broke emigrants in the 1840s and 1850s — they’d drive their oxen across this alkali desert at night to avoid the heat, abandoning wagons and livestock along the way. You can still find wagon rut depressions in places along the Lovelock Hills and out toward Toulon Peak. The route runs roughly parallel to I-80 but a world away from it, tracking old trail segments south of the Humboldt River through BLM desert between Lovelock and the Winnemucca basin. The Humboldt Wildlife Management Area and the sink’s marshy edges give way to pure gravel-and-dirt two-track across open playa and sagebrush flats. At Rye Patch Reservoir State Recreation Area on the north end, you can camp hard on the water before pushing into the dry stretch.

This is a high-clearance route rather than a technical one — the real enemy is sand and mud around the sink’s edges after wet winters, plus the sheer remoteness if something goes wrong. A stock 4WD with good all-terrain tires and aired-down pressure handles this fine in dry conditions; locker out back doesn’t hurt in the sandy sections. Best run April through June and again in September-October to dodge summer heat that pushes 105 degrees in the sink. No permits. Carry a minimum of three gallons of water per person — there is nothing drinkable out there. Cell service is essentially zero between Lovelock and Winnemucca on the back route. This is history you can drive, and that matters.
