Slumgullion Pass — Lake City Continental Divide Viewpoint
At 11,361 feet, Slumgullion Pass sits on CO-149 between Lake City and Creede and is one of the more accessible high-country viewpoints in the San Juans. Pull off here and you’re looking down at the Slumgullion Earthflow — a slow-moving landslide that’s been creeping downhill for roughly 700 years and partially dammed Lake San Cristobal below. The geology alone is worth the stop. Good cell signal here most days, and the pullouts are wide enough for rigs with trailers.
Road is paved and passable in any vehicle during summer. Snowpack can close or heavily restrict travel from November through May — confirm conditions before heading up from Lake City if running early or late season. This is a natural waypoint when staging for Alpine Loop approaches to the east.
