Ouachita National Forest — Kiamichi Mountain Ridgeline Dispersed Camp

Kiamichi Mountain is one of the defining high points of this section of the Ouachita range, and the forest roads that run its ridgeline pass through open shortleaf pine stands with long views south toward the Kiamichi Valley and north toward the Winding Stair. Dispersed pull-offs here are on firm ridgeline ground — gravel and rocky dirt — with natural clearings big enough for a full overland rig and trailer. No water up here; tank up before you climb. Fire restrictions are strictly enforced during dry Oklahoma summers. Wind is real at elevation, so stake your shelter properly.

Access requires a high-clearance vehicle — the road surfaces shift from maintained gravel to rough rocky two-track. Some sections get deeply rutted after wet winters. The ridgeline camps are quiet outside hunting season, but bow and rifle season from October through January packs the area with hunters. Spring turkey season also brings traffic. Outside those windows, this is as remote as it gets in Oklahoma east of the Winding Stair.
