Mount Massive — San Isabel National Forest Highpoint Viewpoint

Mount Massive dominates the western skyline above Leadville — a broad, flat-topped giant that earns its name. At 14,428 feet it’s the second-highest point in Colorado and the centerpiece of the Mount Massive Wilderness. From any high vantage on the Mineral Belt Trail or the Iowa Gulch road, this thing fills the whole western frame. You don’t have to climb it to appreciate it — but the Halfmoon Creek approach on FR 110 puts you right at the base in a genuine high-alpine environment worth staging from.

The primary trailhead is off Halfmoon Creek Road (FR 110) southwest of Leadville — the same road corridor that accesses the dispersed camps in the San Isabel. Road is rough dirt and requires high clearance past the campgrounds. Snow can close the upper road well into June. No services at the trailhead. Wilderness permit not required. This is fourteener country — afternoon thunderstorms are a serious hazard from July onward.
