San Isabel National Forest — Halfmoon Creek Road Dispersed Camp

Halfmoon Creek Road (FR 110) runs west from US-24 south of Leadville into one of the most dramatic alpine corridors in Colorado. Dispersed spots line the drainage before you hit the established campgrounds, giving you essentially the same scenery — Mount Elbert and Mount Massive dominating the skyline — for free. Sites are open and airy in the spruce-fir forest with the creek running below. This road sees serious traffic from peak-baggers in July and August, so arrive mid-week or mid-September if you want solitude.

The road is wide dirt/gravel, fine for high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions. It’s also the main staging road for the Elbert and Massive trailheads, so hikers are walking through at 4 a.m. — just reality here. No toilets outside of the developed sites further up. Confirm fire restrictions with Leadville Ranger District before your trip. Road is typically snowbound November through May.
