BLM Palm Springs Field Office — Twentynine Palms Highway North Dispersed Camp

The BLM land stretching north and east of Twentynine Palms offers classic California desert dispersed camping — pull off a dirt track, set up where you want, and stay up to 14 days. There’s no developed infrastructure out here, which is exactly the point. You get open Mojave desert, clear dark skies, and access to the park’s north entrance without the campground lottery drama. Campfires are generally permitted on BLM land (check current fire restrictions before you go), unlike inside the park itself.

Access is via numerous unnamed dirt tracks heading north off Adobe Road or Sunfair Road. High-clearance is helpful but the flats don’t require 4WD in dry conditions. Sand gets soft in spots — aired-down tires are your friend. No water anywhere out here. Fill up in Twentynine Palms before heading out. Cell signal is spotty to none. Avoid camping in designated cultural resource areas marked on the BLM surface management maps.
