Hell’s Half Acre Lava Field — BLM Developed Trailhead Camp

The Hells Half Acre Lava Field wayside off US-20 has a small BLM-managed pullout area with a vault toilet and interpretive signage — the closest thing to a developed camp directly on the lava field. The flow here is only about 5,200 years old, which makes it fresh by geologic standards and wild to walk on. You’re looking at pressure ridges, lava tubes, and collapse features stretching for miles. It’s not a full campground with fire rings and picnic tables, but overlanders camp here in rigs and it’s an established, documented stop that rangers acknowledge as an overnight area.

Located at US-20 mile marker 220, about 18 miles west of Idaho Falls. Paved access directly off the highway. No drinking water on site — bring your own. Cell signal is spotty to partial depending on carrier. This is the literal gateway to the BLM volcanic plateau dispersed corridor heading north toward Juniper Buttes.

Park on the lava. Sleep on the lava. Simple.
