Wheatfields Lake Campground — Navajo Nation

Wheatfields Lake Campground sits on the eastern shore of Wheatfields Lake at roughly 7,300 feet in the Chuska Mountains, managed by Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation. The setting is genuinely beautiful — ponderosa pines, a cold clear lake, and mountain air that feels nothing like the desert floor below. Fishing is a draw for locals and visitors alike. Sites are basic but functional, with pit toilets and fire rings. It’s a solid overnight if you’re coming at Canyon de Chelly from the south via AZ-12 and want elevation and cooler temps before dropping into Chinle.

Access is paved on AZ-12 — any vehicle can make it. A Navajo Nation Recreation Pass is required; purchase in Window Rock or at the park. Cell service is essentially nonexistent up here. It gets cold at night even in summer — pack layers. The lake can freeze solid in winter, and the road can see snow from October onward.
