Navajo Nation — Tsaile Lake Road Dispersed Camp

Tsaile sits at the eastern rim of the Canyon de Chelly watershed, and the dirt roads threading north from AZ-64 toward Tsaile Lake pass through open Navajo Nation range land dotted with juniper and sage. It’s flat, exposed, and quiet — the kind of place where you wake up to absolute silence and a rim-edge glow at first light. No facilities, no signage, no crowds. This is Navajo Nation land, and camping here requires a permit through the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department — don’t skip that step.

Access is straightforward on graded dirt from Tsaile, passable to most high-clearance rigs in dry conditions. The road softens badly after rain. Cell service is essentially nonexistent. Coordinate your permit before you leave Chinle — the parks office there can sort you out same-day if they’re not slammed.
