Cerro Castellan — Chihuahuan Desert Volcanic Butte Viewpoint

Cerro Castellan sits just inside Big Bend National Park near the Castolon Historic District, a commanding volcanic plug visible for miles across the desert bajada. The structure is the eroded neck of an ancient volcano, stripped of its surrounding cone and left standing while everything else wore down around it. It marks the eastern end-point reference for overlanders crossing out of Big Bend Ranch State Park via the FM 170 River Road corridor. Castolon has a small NPS visitor contact station, vault toilets, and a seasonal store (Castolon Grocery) that sometimes carries fuel — call ahead before counting on it.

The dirt pullouts near Castolon provide solid staging for rigs after the FM 170 drive. No dispersed camping is permitted on NPS land here — Big Bend National Park requires designated sites. But as a navigation waypoint, a photography target, and a landmark to orient your western Big Bend approach, Cerro Castellan is hard to beat. Cell service is essentially nonexistent.
