Malealea Lodge and Pony Trek Centre — Malealea Village Campsite

Established Campground

Malealea Lodge sits at the end of a corrugated dirt road in the Mafeteng District and has been the unofficial gateway to the Lesotho highlands for overlanders and backpackers since the 1980s. The campsite occupies a grassy yard behind the main lodge, with basic ablutions, fire rings, and a kitchen/bar that sells cold beer and local food — rare luxuries this deep into the mountains. It fills up on weekends and in school holidays with South African 4×4 crews; mid-week you may have the place to yourself. Pony treks depart directly from camp into Basotho highland villages, making this more than just a stopover.

Access from Maseru is roughly 80 km south via the A2 to Mafeteng, then gravel and dirt roads to Malealea village. High-clearance is recommended after rain. Cell signal is weak at best — Vodacom has occasional bars. The lodge can assist with local route advice and Lesotho permit information.
