Wakhan Corridor — Khandud Floodplain Dispersed Camp
Khandud is the administrative center of Wakhan District and the logical mid-point camp for anyone running the full corridor. The Wakhan River braids across a broad gravel floodplain here, offering multiple flat pull-offs for vehicle camping with mountain views in every direction. This is one of the few spots in the corridor where you can source basic food and water from the village, and where your military escort can liaise with local authorities. Elevation is around 9,000 feet — nights are cold even in summer.
The road into Khandud is a rough dirt track requiring 4WD and solid clearance. Spring flooding can make the floodplain itself impassable until mid-June. Beyond Khandud, the road deteriorates significantly toward Sarhad-e Broghil — fuel and supplies do not exist, so this is effectively your last resupply and camp-planning stop before the upper corridor. Mandatory permits and escort protocols apply throughout.
