Maclaren River Bridge — Denali Highway Midpoint Crossing

Point of Interest

Around Mile 42 of the Denali Highway, the Maclaren River bridge is a hard landmark on a road that doesn’t have many. The river runs grey-blue with glacial meltwater off the Maclaren Glacier, and from the bridge you can look upstream toward the Alaska Range and downstream into the broad braided valley. It’s one of those places where you feel the scale of Alaska in your chest — open tundra, big water, mountains everywhere. The Maclaren River Lodge sits nearby and has historically offered limited fuel and lodging, though services vary — verify before counting on it.

The bridge is a standard gravel-highway span, passable by all vehicles that can handle the Denali Highway’s washboard gravel. In high water years, the river runs fast and the valley can be dramatic. Early season (May–June) can see ice breakup debris in the drainage. This is also a productive area to glass for caribou during fall migration — pull off on the approach and scan the tundra ridges.
